SHIRT SIZE CORRESPONDENCE FRANCE - UK - USA

12 min de lecture

The measurement of shirt sizes differs from country to country.

In France, the size of the shirt is determined by the measurement of the circumference of the collar in centimeters. The circumference of the button to the end of the buttonhole is calculated: sizes range from 36 to 46 in standard sizes.

In England, we measure the circumference of the shirt collar in inches also from the button to the end of the buttonhole: 14 14.5 15 15.5 16 16.5 17 17.5.

The international sizes are reduced to XS, S, M, L, XL, XXL...so that the M corresponds to the majority of the population.

With these differences, how to know the correspondence of its size from one country to another? We have created a size chart below to help you, based on four criteria: neck size, sleeve length, chest size of the person and chest size of the shirt. The difference between the chest size of the person and the chest size of the shirt corresponds to the comfort. This is essential to be able to move and breathe. The smaller it is, the closer the shirt will be to the body. The larger it is, the bigger the shirt will be for the wearer.

And the detail of the international sizes:

XS = Extra small

S =Small

M = Medium

L = Large

XL = Extra Large

Some rules to determine the right shirt size:

The criteria to be taken into account.

Several criteria are taken into account to determine the ideal shirt size for a person.

  • The bust: once the shirt is closed, we must be able to move and move without feeling tight. The shirt should not be too tight and should not mold the torso too much. It should not float around the arms and torso either. You have to find the right balance.

  • The collar: once closed, it should allow two fingers to pass through but no more and no less in order to be comfortable. The collar size should not be confused with the neck size. The former represents the circumference of the button to the end of the buttonhole, the latter measures the diameter of the neck just above Adam's apple. You can measure your neck circumference with a flexible tape measure and by adding one centimeter you will arrive at the corresponding neck circumference.

  • Sleeves: the sleeve length is calculated by measuring the distance between the end of the shoulder and the thumb joint. You can do this measurement with a flexible tape measure and add a few centimeters for comfort. When opened, the sleeves should be long enough to reach the thumb joint. Once the wrist is closed, they are held a little higher. For information, the length starts at 62 cm for a size 36 and extends to 70 cm for a size 44.

In addition, the wrist should not be too tight to wear a watch, without being too wide either.

  • The flaps: for a formal shirt, the length of the flaps must exceed the fly. For a more relaxed shirt that will be worn with pants, the length of the sides should reach 7 cm below the waist.

Finally, a person who hesitates between two sizes should choose the larger one to be sure not to be too tight in the smaller one.
