How to choose a shirt for the office?

10 min de lecture

When it comes to choosing the perfect shirt for the office, several elements come into play, including collar type, fabric, color and more.

Collar types

For a versatile office shirt, certain features deserve special attention. Opt for collars that lend themselves well to the addition of a tie, such as Italian, French and English collars.

  • Italian collar: wide and sophisticated, perfectly compatible with wider ties;
  • French collar: narrower and more suitable for narrow ties, offering a modern look;
  • English collar: this is a compromise in terms of width, making it a versatile option for a variety of professional occasions.

At Première Manche, our special feature is a hidden button under the collar, so that it stands naturally straight. Of course, this button can be detached to allow a tie to pass through for more formal occasions.

The colors

When it comes to basic colors for office shirts, white and blue remain the classic choices.

  • White: a timeless choice, a safe bet. It blends easily with all tie and suit colors;
  • Blue: in its various shades, it adds a touch of sophistication. Light blue is easy to match, while dark blue goes better with dark suits.

Fabric weight

Fabric weight is an often overlooked but crucial aspect when choosing a shirt for the office. Avoid fabrics that are too heavy, as they can be uncomfortable, especially on hot days. On the other hand, fabrics that are too thin can look unprofessional and show through skin color or undergarments. Opt for the right balance, a fabric that's neither too thick nor too thin, offering both lightness and structure.

In addition, to avoid unsightly creases at the end of the day, choose fabrics that resist wrinkling. Non-iron shirts are perfect for avoiding this: you can find a model in light blue on our website.

Choosing the right type of fabric: Poplin, Twill, Dobby

Today, there's a wide choice of fabrics for shirts. First, there's the fiber of the fabric. At Première Manche, we only offer natural fibers, mostly cotton. Our selection of formal shirts includes poplin, twill and dobby.

  • Poplin: a popular choice for its lightness and smooth texture, perfect for warmer climates;
  • Twill: with its diagonal pattern created by weaving, this is a thicker fabric that offers a slightly textured appearance, ideal for cooler seasons;
  • Dobby: features raised patterns, adding a touch of sophistication without being too formal.
